Botulinum Toxin Treatment
Botulinum toxin is a prescription drug in Canada. It is assessed and prescribed for one person rather than offered from a list, which is why an appointment at Aesthetic Nurse Marta begins with a consultation and an assessment rather than with treatment. Treatment is provided by a Registered Nurse and is planned only where it is appropriate for you.
Why the Appointment Begins With a Consultation
At your consultation we take your medical history, review your current medications, ask about any previous injectable treatments and when they were done, examine the area you have asked about, and discuss what you would like to change. What is appropriate, and whether anything is appropriate at all, is decided at that appointment rather than beforehand.
What the Consultation Covers
- Your medical history and current medications
- Previous injectable treatments and their timing
- Allergies and relevant medical conditions
- Neuromuscular conditions and any relevant diagnosis
- The area you would like to discuss
- What the appointment involves on the day
- Aftercare and what to expect afterwards
- How to reach the clinic with a question
The consultation carries no obligation to proceed, and an appointment can end without treatment.
Who Provides Your Treatment
Treatment is provided by Marta Morozova, a Registered Nurse practising in Vaughan and seeing clients from across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. Assessment, treatment and aftercare are carried out by the same nurse, so your history is known at every appointment.
What Is Recorded at Each Visit
- The assessment made at that appointment
- The plan agreed with you
- The product used and the amount
- Where it was placed
- The aftercare given
- Any follow-up arranged
Keeping that record is what allows a later appointment to be planned with your full treatment history in view.
On the Day
The appointment is short. The area is cleaned first, injections are made with a fine needle, and you are asked to remain at the clinic briefly afterwards. Written aftercare instructions are given before you leave.
What You Are Given Before You Leave
- Written aftercare instructions
- What to expect over the following hours
- What should be reported rather than waited out
- A way to contact the clinic with a question
- The date of a review appointment where one is arranged
- A record of what was done
If anything concerns you once you are home, the clinic asks to be contacted rather than waited out.
Aftercare
Small raised marks at the injection sites are usual immediately after the appointment and settle quickly. Mild tenderness and small areas of bruising can also occur.
Usual Aftercare Advice
- Stay upright for the period advised
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area
- Avoid strenuous exercise for the period advised
- Avoid heat treatments such as saunas for the period advised
- Keep the area clean
- Report any pain that increases rather than settles
- Report anything unexpected as soon as you notice it
Aftercare instructions are given in writing at the appointment and take precedence over anything general.
When Treatment Is Not Offered
Treatment is not offered to everyone. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active infection in the area, certain neuromuscular conditions, a known allergy to the product or its components, and certain medications are all reasons treatment may be postponed or declined.
Established Before Any Treatment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection or inflammation in the area
- Known allergy to the product or its components
- Neuromuscular conditions
- Certain medications, including some antibiotics
- A previous reaction to the same class of treatment
- Recent injectable treatment in the same area
- Any procedure already planned in the same area
These are established at consultation. Where treatment is postponed, we explain what would need to change for it to be considered.
