Collagen Therapy
Collagen therapy is the name given to injectable treatments that work by prompting the skin to produce its own collagen over time, rather than by adding volume on the day. At Aesthetic Nurse Marta in Toronto these treatments are planned as a course across more than one appointment, with an interval between sessions and an assessment at each stage. Treatment is provided by a Registered Nurse.
How Collagen-Stimulating Treatment Differs
Collagen is a structural protein in the skin. The amount the body produces declines with age, and skin can become thinner and less firm as a result. Collagen-stimulating injectables are placed in the tissue and act gradually, so any change appears over weeks and months rather than immediately after the appointment. Because the process is gradual, the plan is written as a series from the start, and each session is reviewed before the next is booked.
What Is Assessed at Consultation
- Skin thickness, texture and firmness
- The pattern of volume loss across the face
- Your medical history and current medications
- Previous injectable treatments and their timing
- Allergies and relevant medical conditions
- The areas you would like to discuss
- Whether a course of treatment is appropriate
- How many sessions to plan and at what interval
Suitability is decided at the consultation. Where a course is not appropriate, we say so and explain what we would suggest instead.
Planning a Course
Collagen-stimulating treatment is delivered across more than one appointment. The number of sessions and the interval between them are set during the consultation and are reviewed as treatment progresses rather than fixed in advance.
What the Plan Records
- The areas included in the course
- The product used at each session
- The interval between sessions
- The aftercare for each session
- The point at which the course is reviewed
- What would cause the plan to change
Because this treatment works over time, the review between sessions is part of the treatment rather than an optional extra.
Areas Commonly Discussed
Collagen therapy is discussed for the face and for areas of the body where skin firmness is a concern. Whether a given area is suitable depends on your skin and your history, and is decided at consultation.
Areas Raised at Consultation
- Cheeks and midface
- Temples
- Jawline and lower face
- Neck
- Décolleté
- Hands
Where more than one area is being considered, the consultation covers the order in which they would be treated and why.
Aftercare
Tenderness, swelling and small areas of bruising at the injection sites are common and settle over the following days. Some collagen-stimulating treatments include massage of the treated area as part of aftercare, and where that applies you are shown what to do and given written instructions.
What You Are Given at Each Session
- Written aftercare instructions for that session
- The name of the product used
- Any massage instructions that apply
- What to expect over the following days
- What should be reported rather than waited out
- A way to contact the clinic with a question
- The date of the next session where one is planned
Aftercare differs between products, so the instructions given at your appointment take precedence over anything general.
When Treatment Is Not Offered
A course of collagen-stimulating treatment is not appropriate for everyone. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, an active infection or inflammation in the area, certain medical conditions and certain medications are all reasons treatment may be postponed or declined.
Established Before a Course Begins
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection or inflammation in the area
- Known allergy to the product or its components
- Bleeding disorders and blood-thinning medication
- Autoimmune conditions under active treatment
- A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
- Recent injectable treatment in the same area
- Any procedure already planned in the same area
These are established at consultation, and an appointment can end without treatment.
